You might think of these planters as the forerunner of today's recycled soda bottle sub-irrigated planters (SIPs). Note the overflow drain hole. How well I remember these waxed paper milk containers. We sipped milk at school in smaller sizes.
We recycled a lot of things back in those days, particulalry post depression and WWII. And then came the 1950's. Boom! The birth of fast food, cars and consumerism.
