It is good to see that Russ Cheatham, one of the original Green Roof Growers in Chicago is still doing such a good job of growing fresh vegetables in EarthBox sub-irrigated planters (SIPs). The only difference is that he is now growing on concrete.
It matters not when you are growing in SIPs. All you need is enough sun and water. You never need to worry about the hard work of turning over the soil and whether it is contaminated with lead or arsenic. SIPs are hygienic and can be organic from day one.
The quality of the plants in these photos tells you instantly that Russ knows what he is doing.

Wow, those plants look awesome.

Thanks Bob! One point of clarification is that - yes, those are my old Earth Boxes but they were given to a good friend of mine while I was in Paris this past summer. He and his family ate well on their tomato, pepper and cucumber "crops." It's also important to note that they had never successfully grown these items in containers before. For your readers, I dropped off these boxes in May of 2010, with the proper organic potting mix, fertilizer, and nursery bought heirloom vegetables (the cucs were leftover seeds from last year's garden). The total investment was about $75 and it took about 1 1/2 hours to set up. All they had to do was water and attend to the fast growing plants/vines. Thanks again and keep up the good word...
