Chris Lyon, CEO of Tournesol Siteworks blogged about an award winning booth at the Tropical Plant Industry Exposition (TPIE) in Florida that featured their TerraScreen living wall.
Shane Pliska of Planterra, an interior plantscaping company in Detroit, is the inventor of the TerraScreen. It is a very straightforward and practical way to construct a living wall (see prior post).
Both Tournesol Siteworks and Planterra are companies of the same vintage as mine from back in the 1970’s. They were the golden years of the interior plant industry for both houseplants and commercial plantscaping. Interior plantscaping was then known as the plant rental business.
Tournesol was then known as Planter Technology. Allen Secrest, father of the Natural Spring planter, founded it. That superb invention was the vehicle in the '70s for converting my entire company to sub-irrigation. It was a revolutionary but most successful step to take at that time. Chris has done a great job of steering the company into the 21st century under its new name.
Shane Pliska’s father Larry started Planterra back in the '70s. It is much to his credit that Planterra has survived the disastrous economic decline of the once great auto capital of America. He has made a significant investment in the future with the construction of Planterra’s new facility in West Bloomfield a suburb of Detroit. There is more to come about it in a separate post.
Speaking of the future, it is great to see Larry's son Shane in line to take over the reins of the family business. He is a bright and forward-looking young man. The industry needs many more like him.
Congratulations to Tournesol Siteworks TerraScreen distributor Bullis Bromeliads, who won the prestigious 1st place booth award at the 2010 TPIE in Ft. Lauderdale. TerraScreen inventor Shane Pliska of Planterra in Michigan visited the show today, and sent over these pictures. He visited the booth and commented:
Their booth incorporated more than 6 unique living wall designs with its unique and colorful bromeliads. The installation appeared to be well-established even though it is only a display for a trade show. It is evidence that the TerraScreen is the most efficient technique for a living wall.
He went on to comment that the green wall seminar in the morning was interesting and well attended. He also reports that Planterra’s new conservatory/greenhouse/retail center in West Bloomfield, MI is set to open on March 1st. He’s hoping to be the first installation of our new VertiGreen Hybrid system anywhere, as well as have TerraScreen columns throughout the retail area. It should be spectacular!
