Have a look at this fun piece of furniture. It could work but where does the water go? Sub-irrigation is the best solution (no wasteful drainage) for any indoor houseplants. How about incorporating sub-irrigated pop/soda bottle planters into the design? What a cool desk this could be.

Of course, there's the usual need for adequate light and knowledgeable plant selection. Skip the grass!

It would also be a cool DIY project for those handy with power tools.
