It’s been a while since the last post and perhaps some of you are wondering if I’m still on the planet. I am. I just needed to take a time out. Anyone who has blogged on a daily basis knows about blogger burnout. It is a reality, particularly if you’re a solo blogger as I am.
During my blogging hiatus I’ve continued to research the subject of urban gardening, urban agriculture, what I call urban greenscaping. While our institutions are still stuck in a prior century, there is a growing buzz on the Internet. It’s in the blogosphere, on Facebook, in forums and people are twittering about it.
I sometimes wonder if our horticultural institutions have web connections and if they do, do they use them? You really have to be living under a rock to not know that sub-irrigated (aka self-watering) boxes, beds and buckets are a vastly superior way to grow food in the city.
I have a ton of information to support this claim and will be blogging about it. Stay tuned!

If you're ever short on ideas, I for one would LOVE to hear more about living walls! It is very difficult to find information on their construction and maintenance online. Especially how it would be possible to bring the concept of an active living wall to a small scale residential application (a single room or an apartment for instance).

I was living under a rock until I found your blog. So I'm not sure how visible SIP methods are to the general public, even people who want to grow plants and vegetables in an urban setting. I went to an Ag college and though I didn't major in horticulture the emphasis was really on farming and irrigation techniques for a farm. Not really much about urban farming or greenscaping. So I wonder if research that goes on in universities is due to funding received from big Ag businesses. Or maybe they're focusing on the impact their research can have on large scale farming and not on the solutions they can offer the regular joe living in a high rise who wants to grow a conservative number of veggies. More bang for their buck? I don't know.

I'm glad you're back. I haven't left any comments here, but your blog has been a near-daily companion this year as I started my own SIP garden. In fact, I just had my first taste of this garden- homegrown arugula!- and I could not have done it without the ideas (i.e. DIY sips), tips, and inspiration on this blog. So, thank you, and I'll be happily staying tuned for coming attractions! One thing I hope you may be able to touch on is how control garden pests in a safe and ecological manner. Those little critters seem to love SIPs as much as the earth.
