I've been experimenting with blue LED light. It's meant to be best for vegetative growth, while red light is needed for flowering/fruiting.

I've got winter lettuce growing on the windowsill with blue LED light, and it's doing quite well, considering that I live in northern England.

You can place the lamp within inches of the plant without injuring it. In fact, I've got up in the morning and found the leaves touching the bulb with no apparent harm.

Thanks much for the feedback Carol. Most interesting. I'm looking forward to more direct experience with LEDs. It looks like the future of indoor plant lighting is just about here.
