Watering in the zone works and you should try it. If the scale I use looks too clunky, too mailroom (or male-room) for your taste in kitchen appliances try this Escali Primo digital multifunctional scale. I don't have one but it has good reviews on Amazon. You can buy it on eBay too. That's where I buy scales and light meters. You should have a digital light meter too.
This scale has an 11-pound capacity, which should be enough for most tabletop houseplants. In addition to white it's also available in black, chrome, metallic, soft pink, warm red, navy blue and chestnut brown.
The scale I use is 55 lb capacity and reads out in 5 modes. It didn't cost much more on eBay than the scale above. Which scale is your choice, but make the choice to use one. Your indoor plants will be smiling for sure.
The white analog scale in this photo also works and it cost about $8 at IKEA. It has a 5-pound capacity.
