The Horticultural Society of New York appears to be adamant that there is only one direction and that’s drain hole down. That's curious in that the American Horticultural Society and Google among others seem to understand that there are two directions, with up being favored.
This is a site search of the HSNY blog where they answer questions from around the country. About 186 of them included the words “container”, “planter” or “pot.
None of them included the word self-watering (or sub-irrigation) in the answer. That looks like a cone of silence to me. Why is that?
Ask the question the next time you speak to a horticulturist in New York. It would be most interesting to know the answer.
